Bulls Practicing For Wet Conditions

Published: October 25, 2007

TAMPA - With a 70 percent chance of rain expected Saturday at Connecticut, the University of South Florida got a preview of what to expect going through a rainy practice Wednesday.

'We'll deal with it. You have to handle footballs in weather conditions,' Coach Jim Leavitt said.

The Bulls, who allowed seven sacks at Rutgers, will be without RT Walter Walker, who suffered a knee injury last week.

Leavitt said senior C Nick Capogna would make the trip to UConn, but G Matt Huners will remain in Tampa.

FSU QB Richardson Gaining Ground

TALLAHASSEE - At the start of two-a-days in August, redshirt freshman QB De'Vontrey Richardson, who spent last spring playing baseball, said he 'didn't know anything' about first-year offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher's playbook. Richardson walked off the field following Wednesday's practice much more prepared.

'I'd say I'm about 85 percent with the playbook,' Richardson said.

A large portion of FSU fans wanted Fisher and FSU coach Bobby Bowden to give Richardson a real shot at being the team's starting quarterback after Drew Weatherford and Xavier Lee were unable to keep the job. But when Lee was demoted to second string following Saturday's loss to Miami, Weatherford regained the job.

While it appears he won't get any significant playing time this season, Richardson believes he and fellow redshirt freshman Christian Ponder can challenge Weatherford and Lee for the job next spring.

THACKER CLEARED: DT Budd Thacker has been cleared to play Saturday against Duke. Thacker resolved an undisclosed 'university issue' Wednesday according to Bowden.

Georgia May Play Freshman Vs. Gators

GAINESVILLE - Georgia RB Caleb King may take off his red shirt Saturday in favor of a red and black jersey.

The highly touted freshman possibly could play against the Gators now that Kregg Lumpkin and Thomas Brown have both suffered injuries. Lumpkin is out for the majority of the season with a knee injury and Brown has a collarbone injury.

INJURY UPDATE: Florida DT Brandon Antwine was not released from the hospital as expected Tuesday, but he should be released from the hospital this morning, Coach Urban Meyer said.

Antwine was hospitalized for several days with a lower back injury.

FS Major Wright is very questionable for Saturday's game after he underwent surgery for a broken thumb, but WR Riley Cooper has more of a chance to play.

Meyer said Cooper, who had two screws inserted into a broken finger, was running during practice, and he should know today if he will play.

Canes' Leggett Ready To Return From Injury

CORAL GABLES - Senior WR Lance Leggett is ready to return to the lineup after missing the last two games due to an ankle injury.

However, Coach Randy Shannon said Leggett will have to earn his playing time before the Hurricanes next game Nov. 3 against N.C. State.
