Jacksonville QB Garrard Could Be Out 4 Games

Published: October 25, 2007

JACKSONVILLE - When the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to release quarterback Byron Leftwich a week before the season, they were counting on David Garrard to stay healthy.

It was a calculated risk then. It may spoil the season now.

Garrard could be sidelined up to a month with a badly sprained left ankle, leaving inexperienced backup Quinn Gray under center as the Jaguars try to rebound from an embarrassing loss to the Colts while facing the daunting task of playing the NFL's only three-game road trip starting Sunday in Tampa.

'I don't know that it gets much more difficult,' Coach Jack Del Rio said.

Garrard has a high ankle sprain, meaning he has ligament damage.

Gray, a fourth-year pro undrafted out of Florida A&M, will make his first career start against the Buccaneers on Sunday. The Jaguars worked out Doug Johnson, Drew Henson and Todd Bouman on Wednesday, but they didn't plan to make a roster move until today.

Also, Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew missed practice Wednesday because of a sprained left knee, but he said he expected to play Sunday.
