Wright Still Out With Broken Thumb

Published: October 25, 2007

GAINESVILLE University of Florida FS Major Wright is probably not going to play against Georgia on Saturday, Gators coach Urban Meyer said.

Wright, who had surgery Monday on the broken thumb he suffered against Kentucky, left practice Thursday with his arm in a cast and sling.

Senior Kyle Jackson likely will replace Wright as the starter. Jackson lost his starting role to Wright in the Auburn game Sept. 29, but the coaches have regained confidence in the senior's abilities.

"He's had a good week of practice," Meyer said. "So has Dorian (Munroe). We expect Kyle to play well."

LB COMMITS: Brendan Beal, a linebacker from Liberty (Bethlehem, Pa.) High, verbally committed to the Gators on Thursday, choosing Florida over Louisiana State and Boston College.

Beal is a five-star prospect and ranked as the No. 2 strong side linebacker in the nation, according to Scout.com.

The 6-foot-3, 240 pounder registered 152 tackles, 11 sacks, caused six fumbles and had two interceptions in his junior season.

All commitments are nonbonding until National Signing Day on Feb. 6.

ANTWINE UPDATE: DT Brandon Antwine left practice in street clothes and was moving gingerly after he was released from the hospital.

Antwine was hospitalized for 10 days with a lower back injury, and Meyer said he's not sure about the timetable for Antwine's return.

"He's obviously doing much better now," Meyer said. "We've got to make sure he catches up with his school work. He's got a lot of rehab to do."

Meyer said LB Dustin Doe dealt with a similar issue more than a year ago, but not to the same degree.
