Deputies are investigating a crash in Apollo Beach that killed a 20-year-old passenger and critically injured the 21-year-old driver of a 2007 BMW convertible Thursday afternoon, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman J.D. Callaway said.
Rachel M. Morris, of 11706 Lynmoor Drive, Riverview, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brittany L. Romer, of 9410 Bullfrog Court, Gibsonton, was driving west on Apollo Beach Boulevard about 5:49 p.m. when the car went off the road on a curve east of Surfside Boulevard, deputies said. The car struck four posts, vaulted into the air and tumbled 291 feet before coming to rest upside down.
Romer was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital. The sheriff's office said this morning that she is alive, but information about her condition was unavailable.
A Reader Comment on this TBO.com story, posted Friday by someone identifying himself as Morris' brother, said Romer, too, has died. He could not be reached for comment.
