ZEPHYRHILLS - Forget fines. Forget stern warnings.
To combat illegal skateboarding downtown, police should be able to confiscate the skateboards of violators, Councilman Danny Burgess says.
Burgess, 21, presented his plan to the city council Monday night. His pitch included a PowerPoint presentation dubbed "Downtown Destruction," showing photos of chipped bricks and decorative plaques Burgess said had been damaged by skateboard wheels.
About two dozen teenagers, some carrying skateboards, showed up to protest Burgess' proposal.
Zephyrhills built an $85,000 skateboard park several years ago on the south end of town, but the teens said they prefer to skate downtown, where they don't have to wear helmets.
With the city attorney absent, council members didn't take up Burgess' plan, but they did talk about how to make skating at the city-run park more appealing.
City Manager Steve Spina also suggested forming a committee of teens and city officials to address illegal skateboarding.
