The Democratic leadership in Congress totally missed the message from 2006 on domestic spending. They now erroneously believe that they were voted in because of their domestic agenda and that they will woo voters by passing massive spending bills and expanding already expensive programs. Their approval ratings say otherwise.
The truth is that the Democrats won in part because the Republicans started acting like Democrats, spending our money without restraint. The Democrats never ran on their own ideas; they ran against President Bush and Iraq. After 12 years of defeating Democratic tax-and-spend ideas, the people did not change their minds about domestic spending. To the contrary, the people decided to teach the Republicans a lesson - we want fiscal restraint and responsibility.
The Democrats could do themselves a favor by looking for budget cuts, not expanding programs. But, I won't hold my breath - it's just not in their DNA.
