Acting On Domestic Violence Saves Lives

Published: October 27, 2007

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and Hillsborough residents, in particular, have good cause to reflect on the issue.

The county has had three domestic violence murders in the last month - compared to about nine last year. Domestic violence counselors report seeing an upswing in cases, they believe brought on by stressful economic conditions that tend to exacerbate substance abuse and violence in the home.

The victims in this case come from all walks of life. Maria Diaz was shot to death by her husband in front of her two young children at their home near Palm River; Roy Burgess killed his wife, Anna, and then himself in Hunters Green, and Elalia Walker of Tampa told a Hillsborough County judge she was being stalked by her boyfriend, Stanley Telfare, who is now accused of kidnapping and killing her.

It is particularly distressing that in a county that has such excellent resources to assist the victims of domestic violence, lives continue to be lost.

Nikki Daniels, executive director of The Family Justice Center of Hillsborough County, says all a victim needs to do is call and there are a myriad of services available to help them - everything from a safe place to stay, to car to get them to work, counseling, financial assistance or an attorney.

Of course, getting victims to make that call is the challenge. Battered women know the most dangerous time for them is when they try to break free of their abuser.

Victims, though, are not alone. Friends and family members can reach out on their behalf. If you are a victim of domestic violence, or know someone who is, please call for help and stop the senseless loss of life.
