Chargers To Play At Home

Published: October 27, 2007

SAN DIEGO - Chased from their homes and practice fields by deadly wildfires, the San Diego Chargers will return home to play the Houston Texans at Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday as scheduled.

The game's date and time had been in doubt because Qualcomm was used as a major evacuation center during the wildfires that swept San Diego County. The stadium was to close as an evacuation center at noon Friday.

'Early Friday morning the Chargers informed me that the NFL has decided to play Sunday's game as scheduled at Qualcomm Stadium,' Mayor Jerry Sanders said in a press release. 'The city will be able to provide sufficient public safety personnel to manage a professional football game without impeding ongoing wildfire recovery efforts.'

Though several blazes still burned Friday across San Diego County, thousands of evacuees have been trickling back to neighborhoods stripped bare.

EAGLES: Starting right tackle Jon Runyan missed his third straight practice with a bruised tailbone and is questionable to make his 185th consecutive start Sunday against the Vikings.

JAGUARS: Running back Maurice Jones-Drew (sprained left knee) was limited in practice Friday - the third consecutive day he's missed part of team drills - and was listed as questionable against Tampa Bay.

JETS: Linebacker Jonathan Vilma will miss Sunday's game against Buffalo with a knee injury.

PANTHERS: Coach John Fox named 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde the starting quarterback for Sunday's game against Indianapolis. Testaverde got the nod ahead of David Carr, who is recovering from a back injury.

STEELERS: Defensive end Aaron Smith will miss his first game since his rookie year in 1999 on Sunday in Cincinnati because of a sprained ligament in his left knee.

VIKINGS: Minnesota won't announce a starting quarterback until Sunday morning, but signs still point to veteran Kelly Holcomb replacing the injured Tarvaris Jackson against Philadelphia.
