'Midnight Rambler,' by James Swain (Ballantine, $24.95)
Jack Carpenter is an ex-cop in the Fort Lauderdale area working as a specialist in abductions. His departure from the force came after he was roundly criticized for beating up a suspect prior to an arrest. The suspect, Simon Skell, is known by the nickname of the 'Midnight Rambler.' Skell, a serial killer, would play the Rolling Stones' 'Midnight Rambler' before attacking.
Now, the previously lost body of one of his victims is found in a back yard. Another suspect emerges, and it appears Skell may go free. Given that this is a case Jack holds dear, he fears Skell's release will cause many more people to die, including Melinda, a major witness in the case against Skell. Melinda was Skell's only victim to escape.
As Jack goes back through evidence, he realizes Skell may be only the tip of the iceberg, and others are involved in the murders. Jack also realizes he is being set up for some of the murders by the others so the perpetrators can go on with their killing spree.
'Midnight Rambler' is a skillful and entertaining work that moves at a brisk and relentless pace. Many authors ply the South Florida crime scene. What is unique here is James Swain's realistic portrayal of a kidnapping investigation.
Especially fascinating was the discussion of security at Walt Disney World; a critical sequence takes place in the Magic Kingdom. Other action is set in Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando, with all locales well-depicted.
This thriller is a fast, fun and furious read.
