TALLAHASSEE - The House and Senate, although still at odds over property tax relief, will reconvene a special session Monday, just one day before the deadline to get a proposal on the Jan. 29 presidential primary ballot.
Legislative leaders made that announcement Friday. Senate President Ken Pruitt, R-Port St. Lucie, earlier had said his chamber might not come back at all to consider the proposals that could save homeowners from less than $100 to several times that amount a year.
Both chambers left Tallahassee after passing their plans - the Senate two weeks ago and the House early last week.
Gov. Charlie Crist, who made property tax cuts a key plank in his election platform last year, again expressed optimism lawmakers would come to an agreement in his weekly radio address although he acknowledged 'the clock is ticking.'
'We are on the verge of a historic tax cut, and we must cross the finish line,' Crist said. 'We must honor our bosses - you, the people of Florida.'
In an e-mail to fellow senators, Pruitt wrote that staffers were analyzing the financial effects of the House plan - work completed later Friday - and that he expected the leadership to offer another proposal by this afternoon.
The Senate essentially passed a plan that had been worked out in advance with House leaders and Crist. The House returned it with some major changes.
