A motorcyclist died this morning near Inverness when his 2007 Yamaha struck the trailer of a van that was stopped and obstructing the southbound lanes of U.S. 41, according the Florida Highway Patrol.

James E. Collette, 38, of Florida City, was pronounced dead on the scene following the 12:20 a.m. crash.

He was riding south on U.S. 41 near Gobler Road when he tried to avoid the 1989 Chevrolet van driven by Richard A. Bartolo, 28, of St. Petersburg.

When the Yamaha struck the trailer, it overturned and Collette was ejected onto the van's trailer, according to a Florida Highway Patrol release.

A separate 2007 Yamaha, driven by Thomas Jude, 19, of Floral City, swerved to avoid the van and overturned, coming to rest on the west shoulder of U.S. 41. Jude suffered minor injuries.

Bartolo and the van's three other passengers weren't injured.

No charges have been filed. An investigation is ongoing.
