GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Fred Everson.
The fishing was a lot better than the weather last week, but the anglers who braved the wind and rain reported good catches.
Captain Danny Guarino told me he worked the mangrove shoreline behind Joe Island for redfish with some success on Thursday. He said the morning bite was good, but that the action tailed off in the afternoon.
Captain Chet Jennings told me he has been catching some snook in the bends of the Little Manatee River, and that there have been some keepers in the mix. He said he has been able to keep his clients on redfish all over the South Shore of Tampa Bay. He sat in one spot near Piney Point for four hours and had three rods bent most of the time using live sardines.
Most of the captains I spoke with last week said there is still some bait on the flats, but much of it is small enough to require a quarter-inch cast net and weighted floats to cast them away from the boat. Water temperatures remain high, and the water is not as clear as it could be, but it is still clear enough for some shallow-water sight fishing.
I was on the water Friday after being out of town for a couple of weeks, and I had no trouble finding a redfish for dinner. I motored up to the north end of the Simmons Park flat and drifted back with the wind. I saw some very big reds, but they were skittish.
Most of the fish I saw were too close to the boat to catch, but I finally hooked a fat 25-incher on a pompano jig that practically hit him in the head. I heard there were some pompano around, but only one skipped in front of the boat ramp at Simmons Park.
