Michael Douglas Enjoying His Role As Family Man

Published: October 29, 2007

He's played everything from a Wall Street vulture to the president, but these days Michael Douglas is focusing on his favorite roles - father and husband.

'I've learned to kick back and be a family man,' he says. 'Since I married Catherine (Zeta-Jones), we've been raising a new family. I'm enjoying it immensely. And my priorities have changed enormously.'

Since getting married in 2000, the two have had a son and daughter.

Douglas was in Savannah, Ga., to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Savannah Film Festival.

The award made him 'feel like I need to check with my doctor and see if everything's OK,' the 63-year-old Academy Award winner joked in an interview Saturday with the Savannah Morning-News.

'I'm slowing down, but I'm not ready to call it quits yet,' he said.

Douglas, a steady hit maker in the 1980s and '90s with 'Fatal Attraction,' 'Wall Street' and 'Basic Instinct,' has delivered some box-office duds lately: the Secret Service thriller 'The Sentinel,' the action comedy 'The In-Laws' and the domestic drama 'It Runs in the Family,' which co-stars his parents, Kirk and Diana Douglas, and his grown son, Cameron.

His most recent role was a lovable kook sniffing after mythical Spanish treasure in 'King of California.'

'Law & Order' Hot On Hargitay's Trail

Like the rest of us, Mariska Hargitay can't seem to get away from the 'Law & Order' series either.

While in Hawaii, the actress from 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' turned on a television and the show was on.

'I was like, 'Argh, I can't get away from it.' I turned it off and ran outside and of course people were like, 'Oh my God you're on TV right now!'' the television detective told Newsweek magazine for editions on newsstands today.

Being a celebrity sometimes has its perks, especially when the Emmy winner gets stopped by a police officer.

'The cops in New York and L.A. have been, how shall I say, very patient. I've gotten a couple of warnings but they've been very gracious. There's definitely a bond, a rapport, with law enforcement,' she said.

Schwarzenegger Says Pot Comments Out Of Context

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says marijuana is not a drug, a British magazine reports today. But his spokesman said the governor was joking.

Schwarzenegger told the British edition of GQ magazine that he had not taken drugs, even though the former bodybuilder and Hollywood star has acknowledged using marijuana in the 1970s and was shown smoking a joint in the 1977 documentary 'Pumping Iron.'

'That is not a drug. It's a leaf,' Schwarzenegger told GQ. 'My drug was pumping iron, trust me.'

Aaron McLear, Schwarzenegger's press secretary, said the governor made the comments in a lighthearted context, noting his interviewer was Piers Morgan, one of the judges on 'America's Got Talent.' Morgan is a former British newspaper editor.

'The governor was doing an interview with the host of 'America's Got Talent,' the newest version of the gong show,' McLear said. 'I think it's important to keep that quote in the context of the environment where it was said.

'Of course the governor understands marijuana is a drug. It's like when he goes on Leno or the 'Daily Show,' if you took something like that out of context, it might seem shocking but it was in a silly entertainment context,' he added.
