TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office was awarded a $1 million federal grant to buy video surveillance cameras to be mounted in high crime neighborhoods and other equipment.
The grant also will cover training and buy cameras for jails.
Over two dozen cameras will be installed countywide in areas of violent crime and gang-related problems. The cameras are bullet-resistant and weather-resistant. These cameras will be monitored by the Sheriff's Targeted Area Response team.
The cameras should be installed by the end of the year.
The U.S. Department of Justice gave the Byrne law enforcement grant to the county for its "Eye On Crime" project, which targets troubled neighborhoods.
The sheriff's office will conduct a public awareness campaign before the installation of the cameras, which will be mounted on poles in public places visible to everyone. The sophistication of the camera monitoring system will be both a deterrent and a tool to prevent and stop crime.
