TAMPA - Gratis hamburgers and tacos add up to some free fast-food lunches this week, thanks to promotions at two chains.

Steal a Base, Steal a Taco is the Taco Bell promotion. Between 2 and 5 p.m. today, tacos will be handed out without charge at the restaurant because of a 90-foot dash by Boston Red Sox centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury during Game 2 of the World Series last week.

Boston went on to sweep the Colorado Rockies, and the series ended on Sunday night.

Now fans and hungry folk can relive the glory today by munching a crunchy taco at no charge.

The promotional offer: If a base is stolen during any of the games, a free seasoned beef taco, worth 77 cents or thereabouts, will be given to each and every customer in the United States who asks for it.

There will be no substitutes or cash redemptions or alternatives allowed, according to the rules of the promotion.

This morning, a curious mix of homeless people and suited businesspeople stood next to one another in line for free Wendy's hamburgers.

Queuing up at a Wendy's on wheels at Lykes Gaslight Square, Paul Stevens sat with two friends at a table set up just after 10 a.m. They were among the first to scarf down free burgers.

"Brunch," he said between bites and slugs on his can of Coca-Cola.

About 1,000 free hamburgers will be handed out as part of a 25-city promotional tour the truck is making for a taste test of the Baconator burger.

Computer kiosks were set up for customers to build their own burgers, with toppings that ranged from guacamole to teriyaki to pineapple to pepperoni.

The Great Taste Tour giveaway began at 10 a.m. and was expected to last until about 2 p.m., said Victoria Mora, who was organizing the giveaway.

Even if the 1,000 burgers are gone when you get there, there were 2,000 gift cards to hand out and T-shirts.
