Boston sports fans have an embarrassment of athletic riches right now, a fact especially hard to miss in Florida.
For example, national darling University of South Florida has watched its once-miraculous football season become mortal with two consecutive losses.
Contrast that with Boston College, currently the No. 2 team in the country and 8-0 for the first time in since 1942. The Eagles take on Florida State and Miami in November, two Sunshine State programs sitting at 5-3 - same as the University of Florida.
The story is the same at the pro level, where the New England Patriots, crushing opponents by more than 25 points per game, are threatening to rewrite the history books with an 8-0 start. The Miami Dolphins are winless, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are at .500, and only the 5-2 Jacksonville Jaguars are in winning form.
Which leads us to baseball, where the Tampa Bay Devil Rays again finished with the worst record in the major leagues while the Boston Red Sox swept the Colorado Rockies in the World Series on Sunday for their second title in four years.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking good so far, but the state's basketball prospects are marginal. The upcoming season for the Miami Heat looks bleak, while the Orlando Magic may be too young to make much noise. Yet in Boston, there are whispers of a 17th NBA championship as the Celtics boldly acquired perennial All-Stars - and possible Hall-of-Famers - Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to make a title run.
Yes, it's hard not to be envious of Boston right now. But we'll stick with our teams and borrow the mantra of Chicago Cubs fans: Wait till next year.
