Romo Signs $67M Deal

Published: October 31, 2007

DALLAS - Add Tony Romo to the list of Dallas Cowboys franchise quarterbacks, right after Don Meredith, Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman.

Having already inched his way toward such elite company by winning 12 of his first 17 starts, often in spectacular fashion, Romo's spot in the team's hierarchy was secured Tuesday with the signing of a six-year, $67 million contract of which $30 million is guaranteed.

Romo is signed through 2013, which means he'll be the face of the franchise when it moves into a $1 billion, 100,000-seat stadium in 2009.

The contract gives Romo the third-highest annual salary for an NFL quarterback, behind only Peyton Manning and Carson Palmer.

Nickerson Among Hall Of Fame Nominees

CANTON, Ohio - Cornerback Darrell Green and receivers Cris Carter and Herman Moore were among 124 modern-era players, coaches, and contributors on the preliminary list of nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fames Class of 2008.

Other first-year eligibles are running back Eric Metcalf; offensive tackles Tony Boselli, Lomas Brown and Richmond Webb; and linebackers Levon Kirkland and former Buccaneer Hardy Nickerson.

Voters will choose 25 candidates from that group as semifinalists; that list will be announced late in November. From there, the list will be pared to 15 finalists, who will be considered at the selection committee's meetings during Super Bowl week.

BILLS: Quarterback J.P. Losman will get the start Sunday when Buffalo hosts Cincinnati.

The team announced on Tuesday that Trent Edwards needs additional time to recover from a sprained right wrist.

PACKERS: DeShawn Wynn was placed on injured reserve with a significant shoulder injury, and wide receiver Koren Robinson was added to the roster.

Wynn, the Packers' leading rusher as a rookie, suffered a 'stinger' Monday night against Denver. The seventh-round pick out of Florida missed time during the offseason with a strained calf and most of training camp with a stomach virus and quadriceps strain.

Robinson recently was reinstated after a one-year suspension for his third violation of the NFL's drug policy.

REDSKINS: Placed cornerback Carlos Rogers on injured reserve and promoted cornerback John Eubanks from the practice squad. Rogers tore two ligaments in his right knee in the first quarter of Sunday's loss to the New England Patriots

STEELERS: Released 2004 second-round draft pick Ricardo Colclough and signed cornerback Anthony Madison.

TEXANS: Signed Craig Nall to add depth at quarterback with starter Matt Schaub ailing after helmet-to-helmet hits in consecutive games.

FORMER BUC ARRESTED: Former NFL running back Rabih Abdullah was arrested early Tuesday and charged with felony corruption by threat against a public servant.

Abdullah, who played for the Bucs from 1998 to 2001, also faces misdemeanor counts of trespassing and resisting arrest without violence.

Despite a lifetime ban against him at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, he was seen inside the casino at about 4:25 a.m. Tuesday, an arrest affidavit states. A tribal police officer placed him under arrest and tried escorting him from the building.

Abdullah, 32, pulled away and threatened the officer, according to the affidavit. He also is accused of threatening an officer at the Orient Road Jail.

OBITUARY: Sam Dana, who was the oldest living former NFL player and once played football alongside Lou Gehrig at Columbia, died in his sleep late Monday in Buffalo, N.Y. He was 104.

He played under the name Sam 'Smoke' Salemi before changing it to Dana in 1945. And for many years, NFL historians thought he had died after another former player named Salemi died.

It wasn't until March 2002 when his son helped correct the error by sending a letter to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
