HAINES CITY - One by one, the Berkeley Prep boys golfers paraded into the restaurant at the Southern Dunes Golf and Country Club on Tuesday after their rounds on the first day of the Class 1A state golf tournament.
The restaurant served as the scoring tent for the tournament, and there was a lot of addition to be done on this wet, windy day.
'The wind was whipping. We got lucky there wasn't a lot of rain,' Berkeley Prep coach Tom Shea said. 'I think they did pretty well, considering the conditions.'
Pretty well was tied for 12th place with a score of 325, 30 strokes behind Orlando Circle Christian, with 18 holes remaining today.
'It's a great golf course and drains well. And the greens were slick after they dried out during the round,' Shea said. 'I would think they would do a little better today. I think they were a little nervous today.'
Freshman Blake Morris led the Buccaneers with a 3-over-par 75, followed by senior Matthew Alberts (81).
Tampa Catholic's Trent Stoker turned in a 10-over-par 82, playing as an individual. St. Petersburg Catholic, paced by Devin Hernandez's 73, is seventh with a 310.
Girls 1A Course Hit Hard By The Weather
DAVENPORT - Tom Shea had to split his time between the boys and girls Class 1A tournaments, since he also is Berkeley Prep's girls coach, and they also made the short trip to Polk County.
The 1A girls tourney was at Ridgewood Lakes Golf and Country Club, only 7 miles from Southern Dunes, but the weather was not nearly as kind to this 5,404-yard course.
Standing water and howling wind sent most scores skyrocketing.
Berkeley Prep turned in a 364, with Kim Carpenter (83) the only Buccaneer to break 90.
'The course was a little wetter than Southern Dunes, and we struggled on the front nine,' Shea said. 'The scores were probably a little higher than I would have liked.'
Northside Christian shot 335, good for third place but 35 strokes behind leader Plantation American Heritage.
Saddlebrook Prep finished the first day in eighth place (350), and Alex Irish of Academy at the Lakes finished tied for 14th after shooting an 80.
