LAKELAND - Amy West's trouble Tuesday at the par-4 eighth hole at The Club at Eaglebrooke only seemed unfortunate at the time. By the time the Durant junior's round ended on the following hole, however, it seemed a bit symbolic.
After watching her tee shot go into the water and hitting her approach as the rain began to pour down, a gust of wind lifted her umbrella away from her bag. West was unable to catch it as it danced across the fairway and saw it fly into the lake, float to the middle and sink to the bottom.
That series of events for West came in the middle of a disappointing stretch of four consecutive bogeys to close her round - causing a great round to sink a bit - and she finished a wet and windy day in the opening round of the Class 2A state tournament with a 5-over 77, leaving her in a tie for 11th place.
'That was crazy. I was sort of mad,' West said of the exploits at the eighth. 'I could have done better, but there's always today.'
One local player not too upset was Wharton junior Shena Yang, who shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for fourth place, three strokes behind Pace's Haley Millsap, the only player to break par with a 1-under 71.
Had Yang not run into trouble at the par-4 second - when she had a triple bogey after her approach found a shrubbery-filled hazard - she might have had a share of the lead after Day 1.
'My short game was kind of messed up. That one hole I made triple, I ended up in those bushes,' Yang said. 'If I do better on that hole today, I think I'll do much better.'
Wharton, in its second consecutive state tournament, ended Day 1 of this year's event in the same spot it ended Day 2 in 2006: 10th out of 16 teams. Kate Demick shot 92, while Christina Vail (96) and Brittany Bradshaw (98) rounded out the scorecard for Wharton, which shot a team total of 360.
The Wildcats are two spots ahead of Plant, which got sub-90 rounds from junior Genevieve King (83) and MacKenzie Puryear (89) and a 90 from senior Bryce Alley on the way to a team total of 371.
Plant's Silverfield Shoots 71 In 2A State Tourney
LAKELAND - Plant sophomore Charles Silverfield was one of five players to break par with a 1-under 71, and the Panthers had four players shoot sub-90 rounds at The Golf Club at Bridgewater to end Day 1 in the 2A state tourney in a tie for fifth.
Silverfield's score put him in fifth place after the first 18 holes, three strokes behind the leader, Julian Suri of Jacksonville Bartram Trail. Plant juniors Doug Letson and Charlie Martin each shot 75 and senior Carter Ilgenfritz shot 85 to help the Panthers shoot 306, 14 strokes back of leader Ponte Vedra Beach Nease but just four back of Orlando Olympia and Miami Palmetto for second place.
Riverview sophomore Ian McConnell, an individual state qualifier, is tied for 27th after a 77.
East Lake, led by Nick Buccina's 74, is tied for 14th in the team standings after shooting a 329.
