RUSKIN - Hillsborough Community College's new SouthShore Center is beginning to take shape as the steel structure of its main complex is about to be encased in concrete.
'Barring the unexpected, we're looking at a May 2008 finish,' said Brian Peterson, project manager for Skanska USA Building.
Classes should start during the second summer session, said Steve Stancil, interim dean of student services, who works out of the college's Sun Point Center in Ruskin.
Initially made up of two buildings adjoined by a covered walkway, the 50,000-square-foot complex will contain classrooms along with health, science, math, reading and computer labs. The facility also will have a student cyber cafe, a student services section and offices for faculty and administrative officials.
SouthShore Center President George Keith said an important feature of the facility is its environmentally friendly design. It will be the first college campus in Florida that's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design designed, using guidelines established by the U.S. Green Building Council.
