TAMPA - The Plant High volleyball lost four Division I players from last season's Class 5A state championship team.
This season, some players who played sparingly will have to step into significant roles.
So far, it hasn't been a problem for the Panthers who improved 3-0 with a non-district sweep of Sickles.
Plant won in three games, 25-19, 25-14, 25-18.
Sophomore Maddie Martin led Plant with 13 kills while junior Danielle Erb had 11 kills. Sophomore libero Ali McCurdy had 14 digs while senior setter Kellie Catanach finished with 30 assists.
In every game, Sickles managed to keep it tight but allowed Plant to pull away. The Gryphons, who fell to 1-2, led 9-8 in the first game, trailed 14-10 in the second and 14-13 in the third before losing momentum towards the end.
'They're a very talented team, they've got a lot of ball control and we just didn't execute,' Sickles coach Rob Brashear. 'I think we got down on ourselves for letting the first game slip away.'
Senior outside hitter Sara Vance led Sickles with six kills, three aces and two digs. Caitlin McDonald added five kills and one ace while setter Madison Comperry had 10 assists.
Taylor said getting her team to execute earlier in the match will be something she wants to tackle in practice.
'I definitely saw that we were starting out slow,' she said. 'A lot of mistakes were made on our part but they're all things we can work on.'
