CLEARWATER - Thanks to the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, American troops in Iraq will be getting a bus load of food, snacks and other items.
The PSTA loaded one of its buses with the items today. The bus company collected the material from its staff, riders, and community organizations and businesses.
The collection was the idea of Gabreille Donaldson, a PSTA marketing employee. She mentioned the idea to her boyfriend, who is stationed at MacDill Air Force Base. He gave her a list of 10 items the troops need, including shower shoes, foot powder, deodorant and shaving supplies. She "thought others would want to donate items, too," she said, and the care package idea was born. The drive to collect the bus load of materials took just a month. Donaldson said the response was "just great."
The PSTA drove the bus to St. Pete Beach city hall. The city clerk also is collecting items, and the material donated by the PTSA will be combined with the city's collections.
The city will be responsible for shipping the care packages to the troops.
