TAMPA - Chris Biuso had been looking forward to Tuesday, a day the King senior would go head-to-head with Plant junior Doug Letson, a friend and another Hillsborough County standout golfer. The eventual outcome for Biuso, however, was another story.
While Biuso struggled off the tee and with his short game to post a 3-over 39, Letson turned in the day's best round with a 1-under 35 on the Meadow Course at Emerald Greens to help Plant, with a team-total 157, defeat Gaither (169) and King (177) in a tri-match.
'I'm glad to see him shoot well even if I couldn't,' Biuso said. 'But I'd like to be competing with him, you know.'
Biuso was only 1-over through four holes but hit a rough patch starting at the par-5 fifth, which began a string of three consecutive bogeys. His only birdie came on the par-5 eighth.
Letson, on the other hand, got on a hot streak around the same time Biuso began struggling. The lefty reeled off consecutive birdies at Nos. 6 and 7 - chipping in for birdie at six before sinking a 10-foot putt at the par-3 seventh - and narrowly missed a third straight birdie at the par-5 eighth. He finished with three birdies and two bogeys.
King junior Steven Romeo, who shot 39, was the only other player to post a sub-40 round. Plant seniors Phil Sipiora and Carter Ilgenfritz each shot 40, while Gaither freshman Josh Black, playing in the No. 6 spot for the Cowboys because No. 1 Chad Olson was sick, also shot 40 in his first high school match.
