WESTCHASE - When it comes to keeping their fuzzy friends healthy, Westchase pet owners don't have to look far for some unique solutions such as acupuncture, herbal and homeopathic supplements, and organic foods.
Jane Boston, a veterinarian for 18 years and founder of Country Chase Veterinary near Westchase, gets about eight to 10 appointments each week for acupuncture on dogs and cats.
Some people can't believe that acupuncture is available for pets, said Boston, 56, of Carrollwood. She said she hopes people will begin to consider acupuncture for treatment and prevention of ailments.
'You're using the body's nervous system to stimulate a release of all sorts of chemicals, which flood your bloodstream and go throughout your body,' she said. 'Your body uses what it needs.'
The acupuncture appointments eventually will be performed at Country Chase Veterinary's nearby storefront location called Natural Paws. Currently, the procedures are performed at the veterinary office.
The shelves of Natural Paws are stocked with herbal and homeopathic supplements, and food that aims to more closely resemble the natural diet of dogs and cats. The store also features standard pet supplies such as feeding dishes, leashes and toys, as well as fun items for owners including handbags, shirts and hats.
