DADE CITY - City hall is losing another key manager.

Joey Wubbena, the city's director of safety services and code enforcement, is leaving Sept. 21. In addition to overseeing building and fire inspections and code enforcement, Wubbena handles safety matters during events and emergencies.

He joined the city fire department at 17, right after high school. When the fire department folded in 2003, he moved into code enforcement.

Wubbena, 46, said he is leaving to improve his retirement options and because he is topped out at the city.

'There was not pressure from anybody to get out,' he said.

But the future for government-sector employment doesn't look bright, given the current tax-cutting climate, Wubbena said.

Wubbena, who makes $57,000 a year, gave his resignation Tuesday.

The next day, Jim Guedry, who owns the Dade City Business Center, offered Wubbena a job overseeing safety measures, environmental compliance and use of adjacent pasture land at the industrial park, Guedry said.

Former City Manager Harold Sample went to work at the business center in July as vice president of planning and development.

Wubbena will start his new job Oct. 1.

He is the third manager to leave the city in recent months. In addition to Sample, Police Chief Phillip Thompson stepped down from active duty Aug. 1.
