Regarding 'Run Away All You Bold, Brave Politicos!' (Metro, Sept. 6):
The Democratic presidential candidates not only failed to display leadership, as Daniel Ruth stated in his column; they ceded leadership to Howard Dean and DNC officials. This creates a leadership vacuum in the near-term.
This vacuum provides the Republican candidates with opportunity to display leadership rather than merely speak about it. By campaigning in Florida and bucking the GOP officials, they can show Floridians they care about them. The same is true with the GOP itself, which does not seem to have drawn the same line in the sand as Howard Dean.
Irrespective of the political parties, most citizens will vote for the candidate deemed the best leader. Florida will remain an important state in the presidential election, and refusing to campaign in Florida during the primaries is a poor way to showcase leadership. This is an opportunity for all candidates and parties, but most of all for the GOP.
