TAMPA - TAMPA - University of South Florida sophomore FS Nate Allen, who had an interception, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble in the Bulls' 26-23 overtime victory against Auburn on Saturday night, was named the Big East defensive player of the week.
Allen also is a finalist for the Football Writers Association of America national defensive player of the week to be announced today.
JUST ANOTHER DAY: Coming off Saturday's upset victory arguably the biggest win in school history — the Bulls approached Monday's practice in their typical no-nonsense manner.
"It was like always. It wasn't any different," USF coach Jim Leavitt said. "We don't get too high and we don't get too low."
ODDS AND ENDS: USF's home game with North Carolina on Sept. 22 will kick off at noon and be televised by either ESPN or ESPN2. … The Bulls were named the national team of the week by the FWAA. The only other time USF was the FWAA team of the week was after defeating Louisville in 2005. … QB Matt Grothe was named to the Big East honor roll. … Chris Grothe, Matt's 15-year old brother, showed up at Monday's practice with his head shaved. Chris had promised Matt if USF beat Auburn he would shave his head.
