TALLAHASSEE - TALLAHASSEE - Josh Dobbie doesn't even have a bio in Florida State's media guide, but the junior walk-on receiver has something a lot of players with bios don't have: playing time this season.
The Bloomingdale High grad made his FSU debut in the second half of Saturday's victory against UAB, used primarily as a blocker on four plays. For someone who hadn't played in a game since he was at Army in 2005, Dobbie was grateful for the opportunity, especially with his parents, John and Darcy, at the game.
"I missed playing,'' Dobbie said after Monday night's practice. "I had to go back to being on the scout team last year after getting used to playing at Army. I'm just trying to get on the field and help the team as much as I can.''
Dobbie graduated from Bloomingdale in 2004 after starring as a wide receiver and catching passes from former Bulls QB Tony Thomas Jr., who gave up football at FSU to concentrate on baseball. While Thomas Jr. is now a rookie in the Chicago Cubs organization, Dobbie is climbing the depth chart at tight end for the Seminoles.
He transferred to Hillsborough Community College for a semester after leaving Army, and enrolled at FSU last fall and walked onto the football team. His brother, Jordan, is also a walk-on receiver for the Noles.
"It was good getting on the field for the first time,'' Dobbie said.
VOWING TO PLAY: RB Antone Smith returned to practice Monday, two days after suffering a concussion when he fell hard to the turf against UAB. Smith is not expected to participate in contract drills this week, but he plans to play Saturday at Colorado.
"I feel pretty good, not bad for a first day,'' Smith said. "I'm just a little sore in my neck. There's no chance at all [of me not playing]. I'm not dizzy or droopy eyed or anything.''
ANDREWS OUT: Defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews remained absent Monday, still home recovering from a bout of pneumonia. LBs coach Chuck Amato is filling in for Andrews, who is under orders to stay at home and rest.
"I don't expect him back [today],'' FSU coach Bobby Bowden said. "I don't even know if he'll get back this week. He did feel better. He's going to have to listen to his doctor whether he wants to or not. We have to plan like he's not going to be there, then if we get him, it'll be a bonus.''
BLOG BONUS: FSU senior WR De'Cody Fagg opened the season as the Noles' offensive captain, but to regain that title, Fagg has his work cut out. To read more, visit TBO.com, keyword: Seminoles Report.
