TAMPA - The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office thinks its deputies were justified in fatally shooting a man accused of killing Sgt. Ron Harrison last month, sheriff's Col. Gary Terry said Monday.
But it's not up to the sheriff's office to make that ruling.
The office will meet with prosecutors Wednesday morning to discuss the case and the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Michael Phillips.
"They'll review our case file and make a ruling if the shooting was justifiable," Terry said.
The ruling likely won't come for at least two weeks, he said.
Deputies say that on Aug. 15, Phillips shot and killed Harrison, a 55-year-old career deputy.
Phillips later died after a shootout with lawmen.
