TAMPA - TAMPA - A day after being named Big East Defensive Player of the Week, University of South Florida sophomore FS Nate Allen added another honor when he was named the Football Writers Association of America National Defensive Player of the Week.
Allen was chosen from among 11 national finalists to win the award.
"It's a great honor," Allen said. "I just thank the Lord for blessing me with the talent to be able to do that."
In Saturday's 26-23 overtime upset of Auburn, Allen had an interception, recovered a fumble and caused a fumble. Allen also had seven tackles, including six unassisted, and broke up a pass.
ODDS AND ENDS: Senior NT Richard Clebert had a sore arch at the end of practice and had to be carted up to the athletic facility. … Brett McMurphy, The Tribune's USF beat writer, will be on "USF Magazine" with Bobby Fenton and Mike Pepper tonight between 6-7 p.m. on WQYK, 1010 AM. … With no game Saturday, USF's coaches will hit the recruiting trail this weekend, with some starting out Wednesday and others leaving after Thursday's Bull Bowl.
