Regarding 'It's Time To Scale Back 9/11 Events, Some Say' (Nation/World, Sept. 2):
I'd like to begin by saying upfront that I was absolutely nauseated by this article. The writer asks if all the public mourning is still necessary. I would like to think that the answer to that is quite obvious: Yes, it is still necessary in every conceivable way.
That was bad enough. But the quote that really got under my skin was the one in which the woman asked, 'Doesn't grieving have a shelf life?' I don't think it gets any more ignorant than that.
I didn't realize that there was a time constraint on how long a nation can grieve for 2,996 of its people tragically lost in a single day. The moment we stop mourning and allow ourselves to forget is the same moment that history will repeat itself.
