NEW PORT RICHEY - Pasco County sheriff's detectives have released the identity of the suspect in Friday's robbery of the Colonial Bank in Port Richey who killed himself moments later.
Danny J. Gerbasi, 52, of 13312 Carol Drive, Hudson, was identified through a fingerprint comparison, according to sheriff's officials.
He has no criminal record in Pasco County but has been arrested in other states, officials said.
About 3:10 p.m. Friday, a man with a sawed-off shotgun walked into the bank at 9431 U.S. 19 and handed a teller a note. He fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
The man dropped his note and some money, which witnesses tried to gather for deputies, before pedaling away on a bicycle. Nearby in the parking lot of Dillard's at Gulf View Square mall, another group of witnesses tried to stop him. He fell off his bike and then produced a gun, firing at least one shot into the air before reloading the weapon, authorities have said.
"Bye," Gerbasi reportedly said.
Then he shot himself in the head, according to sheriff's officials.
