TALLAHASSEE - TALLAHASSEE - OT Caz Piurowski, who made the switch from tight end this past offseason, has not experienced many constants in his short tenure at Florida State. But for now, the 6-foot-7, 276-pound lineman plans on staying at tackle.
FSU coach Bobby Bowden said previously that Piurowski may start to receive more reps at tight end in blocking situations, but according to the former Land O' Lakes standout, it hasn't happened yet.
"They haven't really talked to me about it," Piurowski said Tuesday. "If they wanted to, if they thought that would be best for the team, then I'll be open for it. But I think as of right now I'm sticking with tackle."
The sophomore battled closely for the starting job during fall practice, but has not appeared in FSU's first two games. Redshirt senior David Overmyer looks to have locked up the position for now.
"[I] just have to keep working hard and hopefully I'll get my chance some how this year," Piurowski said. "Whether we're up big in the game or someone needs a break, hopefully I can get in the game and show them what I can do and prove myself."
THIN AIR: LB Marcus Ball said Tuesday that the defense is preparing for a shifty offense this week, but that the team is not overly concerned with the thinner air conditions of Colorado.
"No, I don't think we're paying attention to [the air conditions]," Ball said. "If it is a problem we'll figure it out when we get there.
"They [Colorado's offense] misdirection real well. They get you running east to west and run right at you and you don't see it coming. You've just got to stay disciplined and do your job."
SIMS FITS WELL: FB Marcus Sims played well when his number was called last Saturday, and Bowden said offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher likes what he adds to the offense.
"Jimbo wanted to use him at fullback as well as tailback because he wanted to try to get some breakaway ability in there at fullback," Bowden said. "Also somebody that could catch a pass and do something with it."
Against UAB, Sims carried the ball seven times for 45 yards, caught three balls for another 33 yards and scored his first career touchdown.
MOVES TO END: NG Kendrick Stewart said Tuesday that coaches have asked him to switch to defensive end and that he expects to see significant playing time Saturday at Colorado.
"Coach Bowden said it would be a great move for me because he's seen me at tackle and said I look athletic enough to move to end," Stewart said. "Wherever the team needs help I'll move."
NOLE NUGGETS: Defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews missed practice again Tuesday as he continues to recover from pneumonia. Bowden said that he expects to have news on the status of WR Joslin Shaw and DE Kevin McNeil sometime today.
