The blast of the shofar, a ram's horn, signifies the start of the High Holy Days, the Jewish holiday season.
It begins tonight at sundown with Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, and wraps up Sept. 21 with Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement.
During the 11-day period, Jews go to synagogue for special prayers, Torah readings and to be with loved ones.
Rosh Hashana also is the Day of Judgment, when Jews examine their past deeds and ask for forgiveness of sins.
