ST. PETERSBURG - Four days after the death of city council Chairman John Bryan, voters are going to the polls today to cast ballots for two of four council seats up for election this fall.
Voters in District 3, which mostly encompasses the northeast St. Petersburg waterfront area, have four names on the ballot: Bill Dudley, 63; Cliff Gephart, 37; Cathy Harrelson, 53; and Ed Montanari, 49. The incumbent, Bill Foster, is stepping down because of term limits.
In District 5, which covers the southern end of the city, voters will choose from three contenders: incumbent James Bennett, 55; Debra Johnson-Woodard, 55; and Chris Kelly, 41.
Polls opened at 7 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. A light turnout is expected.
The top two primary winners in each race will advance to the Nov. 6 general election.
Bryan's vacancy will be filled by the council within 45 days.
The council on Thursday will fill Bryan's positions on other boards, including the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority and the Pinellas Metropolitan Planning Organization.
