OCALA - No backpacks are allowed in Marion County schools today.
School district officials notified parents yesterday via an automated telephone message saying several schools had received written threats of violence in the mail targeting the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Marion County School Superintendent Jim Yancy says the threats prompted officials to ban backpacks and book bags on all public school campuses for the day to help authorities investigate the threats.
Meanwhile, every campus will also be monitored extensively.
