LAKELAND - Police are still investigating a car crash today on a scenic road in Lakeland that injured six people, including four children. One child, a 5-month-old infant girl, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa with critical injuries, Lakeland police spokesman Jack Gillen said. No identities have been released.
The head-on collision happened about 1:30 p.m. at Collins Lane and Lake Hollingsworth Drive. A half-mile stretch of Lake Hollingsworth Drive, from Phillips Avenue to Crystal Lake Drive, was shut down for more than an hour. According to Gillen, a westbound car drifted across the center line and into the path of an eastbound car driven by a woman and carrying four children, ages 14, 10, 3 and 5 months.
Paramedics sent all six people to the hospital, including the child who was airlifted. Lake Hollingsworth Drive is a three-mile scenic drive around the lake and is not considered a high-speed road.
