Immokalee Fire Survivors, Family To Split $6 Settlement

IMMOKALEE - Five survivors of a mobile home fire and the families of five others who died in the blaze will share a $6 million insurance settlement.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the March blaze in the crowded mobile home. Detectives said the fire was intentionally set.

Doug McCarron is a Coral Gables attorney representing most of the victims. He says the families agreed the worst injured in the blaze will get larger portions of the settlement. Most of the survivors have returned to their homes in Mexico and Guatemala.

Attorneys alleged in a lawsuit that mesh wire over the windows made it difficult for the 10 people sleeping in the mobile home to escape. Insurers for the mobile home park agreed to the settlement after months of negotiation.
