PLANT CITY - Bids will be opened in October for replacement of an aging bridge on County Road 39 spanning the Alafia River.
If all goes as expected, motorists will be using the replacement bridge about a year from now, said Edward Arnold, project manager for the engineering division of the Hillsborough County Public Works department. The bridge over the river south of Plant City was built in 1962 and is structurally deficient, he said.
The replacement will include 12-foot lanes, and sidewalks and shoulders on the bridge and approaches.
The bridge is about 294 feet long, he said.
Crews will build a temporary bypass bridge so motorists will be able to cross the river without major detours during the nearly $5.2 million project.
