MLB Steroids Panel, Prosecutors To Meet

Published: September 13, 2007

ALBANY, N.Y. - Representatives of a special commission examining illicit steroid use in Major League Baseball are scheduled to meet today with Albany County prosecutors, who are investigating a nationwide drug distribution network that served numerous professional athletes.

It will be the second meeting between Albany authorities and members of a commission headed by former U.S. Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell, D-Maine, whom MLB has appointed to investigate whether players violated the league's drug policies between 2002 and 2006.

The sides first met in March, but prosecutors said they did not turn over any names of players then.

Now prosecutors and investigators have spent months sifting through thousands of pages in records seized from wellness clinics and an Orlando pharmacy whose operators are accused of conspiring with physicians to distribute prescription drugs, mostly steroids, to clients including pro athletes and thousands of other people.

The meeting with Mitchell's team comes after various news reports indicating three top baseball players and at least two National Football League members received performance-enhancing drugs during the past two years.

The drugs allegedly were provided to the players by the Orlando pharmacy that was raided Feb. 27 and has been identified by authorities as the central target in their case.

Final Games Set For Shea, Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK - Yankee Stadium is set to host its final regular-season game on Sept. 21, 2008, with New York playing Baltimore.
Shea Stadium will hold its regular-season wrapup a week later, on Sept. 28 against Florida.

The Yankees also will host the All-Star Game.

Both New York teams are moving into new ballparks in 2009.

Yankee Stadium opened in 1923. The new $1 billion ballpark is built across the street and will keep the same name.

Shea opened in 1964. The $800 million Citi Field is being built beyond Shea's center-field wall.

DODGERS: A bruised hand forced right-hander Derek Lowe out of Wednesday night's start against the Padres, and will keep him on the sideline until this weekend at the earliest.

Lowe was injured while playing catch with fellow pitcher Jonathan Broxton.

MARLINS: Claimed right-hander Marcos Carvajal off waivers from the Mets and moved infielder Aaron Boone to the 60-day disabled list.

MARINERS: First baseman Richie Sexson, who has missed nine of the last 11 games, has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his left hamstring and likely will be out for another 10 days.
