MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins announced Thursday that General Manager Terry Ryan has resigned, but will stay with the team as a senior adviser.
Ryan has been the team's general manager for 13 years. He said his resignation was effective Sept. 30.
'I felt a lot of elation when we won, and sorrow when we lost,' Ryan said. 'Now all of a sudden the defeats are getting a little bit tougher to take and the wins aren't as much fun. That's not a good thing to experience as a general manager.'
The Twins won the American League Central last season, but they're two games under .500 this season and out of the playoff chase.
Ryan said his decision had nothing to do with the team's record. 'If we won 100 games this year or lost 100 games, this was going to happen,' he said.
Ryan, 52, has long been hailed as one of baseball's best and most savvy general managers, working within a limited payroll to build a team that won four AL Central titles in five seasons.
'This is a good thing for me. My health's intact. My marriage is intact. That's a difficult thing to do in baseball,' Ryan said.
The team also announced it promoted Bill Smith to general manager, which was not surprising on a team that has always held a promote-from-within philosophy. Smith began in the organization as the director of baseball administration in 1989, and he was promoted to assistant general manager at the same time Ryan took over for Andy MacPhail as GM in September 1994. Smith's primary responsibilities have been planning for the new ballpark, overseeing the Twins' development academies in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, and sharing contract negotiations with Ryan.
ORIOLES SUSPENSIONS: Manager Dave Trembley and pitcher Daniel Cabrera were suspended Thursday by Major League Baseball for their roles in separate incidents during the last week.
Trembley was suspended for three games because he followed his ejection from Wednesday's 18-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels with an animated tirade near second base.
Cabrera was suspended for six games for intentionally throwing a pitch at the head of Boston's Dustin Pedroia on Sept. 7 and his part in the bench-clearing incident that followed.
Both Trembley and Cabrera also were fined undisclosed amounts. Trembley began serving his suspension Thursday against the Angels. Cabrera will appeal his suspension and will be able to play until the appeal is addressed.
HALL INDICTED: Former major-league outfielder Mel Hall was indicted Wednesday in Fort Worth, Texas, on charges he sexually assaulted two girls - ages 12 and 14 - who played on elite basketball teams he coached in the 1990s.
The 46-year-old Hall could face life in prison if convicted, said Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Kim D'Avignon.
