CROSS COUNTRY: Jesuit, Sickles Win Gator Invitational

CREWS LAKE – Sickles High's Derek Wehunt, the Sickles High girls and the Jesuit boys all triumphed Saturday at the 11th Annual Gator Invitational Cross Country Meet.

Wehunt won his second straight boys title at the Gator Invitational. He improved by 55 seconds over his 2006 time with a 15:52 clocking. Tampa Jesuit's Connor Revord was second with a time of 16:03. Land O' Lakes High's Felix Soto was third with a 16:32.

Revord pushed Wehunt in this race.

"I did really good,'' said Wehunt. "I'm really excited. I won it [Gator Invitational] last year. It was a big improvement [in time]. I was up there but there were kids around me. It [the weather] felt fine out there. I know Conner has an amazing kick. I had to get out earlier. He [Connor] always helped me improve myself."

Ocala Vanguard's Tori Lawson won the girls race with a time of 20:02. Pasco High's Leeann Eble, last year's winner, was second with a 20:42 time. Sickles runner Amanda Newby was third with a time of 21:05. Wiregrass Ranch freshman Ariel Gray was fourth with a time of 21:15. Sickles' Emily Wehunt was fifth with a clocking of 21:23.

"It's a really good course,'' said Lawson. "I liked it. I took the lead right after the two-mile. It [the weather] was really nice. It helped."
