HE SAID IT
'I kind of know how West Virginia quarterback Pat White feels every week. I didn't know I was that close to 200 or I might have done a quarterback sneak on that last play instead of taking a knee.'
- Indiana sophomore QB Kellen Lewis after throwing three TDs and nearly setting an Indiana rushing record for quarterbacks with 199 yards on 18 carries.
WHO'S HOT
Purdue QB Curtis Painter, who has thrown 13 touchdown passes with no interceptions this season. After tying a school record with six TD passes last week, he passed for 360 yards and three touchdowns as the Boilermakers beat Central Michigan 45-22.
WHO'S NOT
Syracuse (0-3). The Orange hadn't started a season with three straight losses in 21 years and have been outscored 118-32 by three teams whose combined record in 2006 was 13-24. The Orange entered Saturday's 41-20 loss to Illinois having allowed 426 yards and 38.5 points. Illinois had 443 yards after three quarters and finished with 508. The Illini gained 378 yards rushing, the most since they had 420 against Minnesota in 1975.
NUMBERS GAME
Consecutive losses suffered by Notre Dame dating to last season. The Fighting Irish have lost five straight for the first time since the 1985-86 seasons, Gerry Faust's last year and Lou Holtz's first. Notre Dame is winless after three games for just the second time in school history, putting coach Charlie Weis in unwanted company with former coach Bob Davie.
STILL WAITING
Mike Flynt suited up for Sul Ross State, 37 years after he was supposed to start his senior season. His first hit, however, will have to wait another week. The 59-year-old linebacker remained on the sideline for his team's 55-14 loss to Division III powerhouse Mary Hardin-Baylor.
