Virginia Edges Heels

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Cedric Peerman shredded the North Carolina defense for 186 yards and a touchdown, and Chris Gould tied a school record with five field goals as visiting Virginia (2-1, 2-0 ACC) held off North Carolina (1-2, 0-1) 22-20 on Saturday.

Gould's kicks included a 48-yarder in the third quarter that was initially ruled no good by officials under the crossbar. Coach Al Groh challenged the call and it was overturned. That gave Virginia a 19-7 lead.

But North Carolina shook off the reversal and drew to 19-14 when T.J. Yates hit Hakeem Nicks on a 53-yard scoring play. Nicks slipped one tackler and dragged another Virginia defender about 7 yards into the end zone.

The Tar Heels forced a Virginia punt and moved from their 20 to the Cavaliers 41. But defensive end Chris Long snatched Yates' pass out of the air and ran 25 yards to the North Carolina 30.

CLEMSON 38, FURMAN 10: Cullen Harper went 16-for-19 for 266 yards and three touchdowns as No. 20 Clemson (3-0) beat visiting Furman (1-2).

In just his third start, Harper continued to show his mastery of the Tigers offense. He has 10 touchdown passes, no interceptions and has completed 72.5 percent of his passes.

Even so, one of the biggest cheers of the day for Clemson came when highly touted freshman Willy Korn got in the game early in the fourth quarter. On just his third play, Korn threw a 42-yard touchdown pass to La'Donte Harris for the first TD of his career and a 38-3 Tigers lead.

The Tigers made few mistakes and their defense made stops when it needed to. The Paladins gained 384 yards, but failed to score more than 10 points for the 10th time in their last 11 games with Clemson.

VIRGINIA TECH 28, OHIO 7: Tyrod Taylor didn't exactly make No. 18 Virginia Tech's offense shine, but the freshman quarterback ran for a touchdown and didn't make any mistakes as the host Hokies (2-1) struggled again but beat Ohio (2-1).

Inserted into the lineup in place of Sean Glennon to energize the running game and help mask the deficiencies in the offensive line, Taylor limited his running and completed 18 of 31 for 287 yards. He also scored on a 6-yard draw play.

WAKE FOREST 21, ARMY 10: Aaron Curry returned an interception 84 yards for a touchdown, and host Wake Forest (1-2) held Army (1-2) to 56 total yards in the second half.

Kenneth Moore brought a punt back 55 yards for another score for the Demon Deacons, who avoided their first 0-3 start under Coach Jim Grobe by keeping things simple, throwing just two passes in the first half and leaving the scoring largely to their defense and special teams.

NORTH CAROLINA STATE 38, WOFFORD 17: Andre Brown rushed for 133 yards and a career-high three touchdowns, leading host North Carolina State (1-2) past Wofford (2-1).

The Wolfpack finished with 217 yards rushing in snapping a nine-game losing streak that was their longest since 1959. They entered averaging just 71 yards on the ground in two games, having lost leading rusher Toney Baker to a season-ending knee injury in the opener.
