I read with interest the article 'A Distant War Hits Home' (Commentary, Sept. 16). Most of the writers commented on how unaffected they are by the War on Terror; however, only one writer actually sought out a way to be involved. I don't know anyone personally who is serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, either. However, as an American who deeply appreciates the sacrifice the men and women of the military and their families make, I have found ways to be affected.
That is to say, I have involved myself by adopting a soldier through Soldier's Angels - www.soldiersangels.org - and thanking military personnel for their sacrifice and service when I see them. Most of the men and women I have encountered have been surprised and pleased that someone would stop to acknowledge them, often responding with, 'Oh, thank you, ma'am.'
Many of us don't know anyone serving and many are not affected by the war, but if we choose to, we can make a difference in these heroes' lives. I encourage every American to stop simply giving lip service to supporting the troops and contact the Fischer House, the Veteran's Administration, the Wounded Warrior Foundation or any of a number of fine organizations that actually give aid to our military past and present.
