Published: September 18, 2007

ST. LEO - The Lions' volleyball squad warmed up for this week's Sunshine State Conference opener with a perfect 4-0 record at the Bryant University Tournament in Smithfield, R.I., last weekend.

The victories, against C.W. Post, Bentley College, Mercy College and Bloomfield College, all came via 3-0 sweeps. But the most encouraging part of the wins may have been the offense of OH Audrey Starkebaum, who missed several matches early in the season.

Starkebaum had 25 kills against only three errors in games against Mercy and Bloomfield. OH Chelsea Armer and MB Kaitlin McKenna added to their strong early-season performances with double-digit kills against C.W. Post and Bentley.
Saint Leo (13-3) will go to Winter Park to face Rollins (9-5, 1-0) Friday night at 7. Saturday afternoon the Lions will be in Melbourne to face Florida Tech (11-2, 0-2).

WOMEN'S SOCCER: A 3-1 loss to Nova Southeastern on Wednesday got the Lions (4-2, 0-1) off to a poor start in the SSC race.

Sara Macko had the lone Saint Leo goal, but it wasn't nearly enough to beat the Sharks (5-1, 1-0), who avenged a 1-0 overtime loss at University Field last season.

The Lions did rebound with a 3-1 home victory against Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday. They play two SSC games this week, both at home: Wednesday night against Florida Southern (6-1, 0-0), and Saturday afternoon against Rollins (5-3, 1-0).

MEN'S SOCCER: After beating Palm Beach Atlantic 4-2 on Tuesday, the Lions (2-2-2, 0-1) lost their SSC opener 3-2 in overtime at Nova Southeastern.

Freshman Jonathan Glenn had both Saint Leo goals against the Sharks, but a 97th-minute goal by Nova Southeastern was the difference.

Junior Brandon Whitsett had two goals and an assist against Palm Beach Atlantic, giving him four goals on the season. Eusabio Montoya continues to lead the team with six goals.
Saint Leo plays a SSC home match against Rollins (5-2, 1-0) on Friday night in its only contest this week.

CROSS COUNTRY: At the University of Tampa Early Bird Classic on Friday, the men finished ninth out of 13 teams, and the women finished 11th out of 12 teams.
