Prep Notebook: Plant's Breit May Get OK To Play

Published: September 18, 2007

TAMPA - Plant High senior Chris Breit has been at every football game, joining the other captains at midfield for the coin toss prior to kickoff.

While the rest of his teammates don pads under their jerseys and get to play in the games, Breit has been relegated to the sideline because of a stress fracture in his back. That might change this week.

Once thought to be out for the season, the starting middle linebacker could receive medical clearance when he visits the doctor on Wednesday. Breit has been participating in light workouts with the Panthers.

"He comes out with us every day and runs with us, but he's not in football shape," Plant coach Robert Weiner said. "If they clear him, we might let him in on a few plays Friday night and get him back into shape. We still have a little ways to go before he actually returns."

FOLLOWING RAVENEL: Evan Ravenel, senior forward on the Brandon basketball team and a three-star recruit by Scout.com and two-star recruit by Floridahoops.com, visited Wichita State last weekend. It was his third of four scheduled college visits.

Ravenel's father and AAU coach, Eugene, said his son has a "long standing relationship" with Wichita's coaching staff. He said some of the coaches at Wichita recruited Evan when they coached at Winthrop.

Virginia Tech will be Ravenel's fourth and final official visit. He will visit Virginia Tech on Sept. 29.

In other basketball news, Leto athletic director Oscar Gonzalez announced Tom Brooks will be the new boys basketball coach. Brooks, who coached the varsity girls team, replaces Todd Price, who left Leto for the open coaching position at Alonso.

Brooks inherits a program that went 15-11 last season. The girls team finished 2-20 last year.

FALCONS FLYING HIGH: Facing a 0-3 start to the football season, Leto coach Hugh Dehnert expressed his fears to one of his assistants before the Falcons' game against Robinson.

"I was just sitting there and I said if we don't win this game, we're in for a long year," Dehnert said.

Leto stunned the Knights in a come-from-behind victory Friday night. With 12 seconds remaining in the game and down by one point, kicker Carlos Perdomo nailed a 34-yard field goal, his third of the game, for the 29-27 win.

Behind for most of the game, Dehnert said something clicked in his players to secure the team's first victory.

"I just didn't see it in their eyes in the first half," he said. "Then we got aggressive and they started playing their hearts out."

Leto hosts Alonso on Friday night for their homecoming game.

PREGAME HONORS: Taylor Pike, who, as a senior in 2003, was the first quarterback in Cambridge Christian history, was honored posthumously for his contributions to the Lancers program prior to last Friday's kickoff against Lakeland Santa Fe Catholic at Sam Horton Field.

Pike died in a motorcycle accident May 14 in Apollo Beach. He was 21.

Several of Pike's family members, including parents Bob and Connie, were present at the pregame ceremony. They were presented with flowers from the Lancers' captains and a framed No. 11 jersey from Coach Rick Shears.

Pike quarterbacked the Lancers to a 4-5 mark in their inaugural season. He also threw the first touchdown pass in school history, a 70-yarder to Spencer Santiago.

Shears said the event was sponsored and conducted by the school's booster club.
