Ever noticed how wasabi, the Japanese version of horseradish, gets you right in the nose?
Oh, you'll feel the burn in this offbeat melange that includes crunchy wasabi peas, those addictive Asian munchies. Available in most grocery stores, the sweet-salty orbs add a kick to this sinus-scorching salad.
Any shredded cheese will do, and you can experiment with your favorite nuts and salad greens. Sugary grape tomatoes and a creamy salad dressing of your choice balance the punch.
With crisp cracker bread on the side, this laid-back dinner will light your fire without turning on the stove.
WASABI WALLOP CRUNCH
3 to 4 cups romaine lettuce, torn into pieces
1/4 cup each shredded Parmesan and baby Swiss cheese
2 tablespoons each chopped walnuts, pecans and slivered almonds
1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
1 cup grape or cherry tomatoes, halved
1/2 cup wasabi peas
Coarse salt, cracked black pepper, to taste
Toss together lettuce, cheeses, nuts, onion, tomatoes and wasabi peas. Season with salt and pepper. Add your favorite bottled salad dressing to taste.
Makes 4 servings.
