MIAMI - Closing arguments begin today in the international custody dispute over a young Cuban girl.
The judge will try to decide whether the 4-year-old should return to Cuba with her father, Rafael Izquierdo, or stay with her foster parents in Miami.
The girl's mother has said she wants the girl to be with Izquierdo. But Florida child welfare officials are instead backing the girl's foster parents - former sports agent Jose Cubas and wife Maria - who have adopted the girl's half brother and want to adopt her as well.
The mother came with the children to the United States in March 2005 but lost custody after an investigation into charges that she suffered mental illness that made her an unfit parent. Her son has testified that she beat the children and threatened to kill herself with a knife.
