NEW PORT RICHEY - It's only natural the county would seek a permanent director to promote tourism.
Ten finalists are vying for the job of public communications manager and a decision could be coming soon.
Banking on the popularity of eco-tourism, Pasco County adopted the slogan 'It's Only Natural.' Marketing the county as a venue for sporting events is another avenue officials have been exploring.
'Heads in beds' is an unofficial rallying point for tourism interests eager to attract out-of-towners to local hotels.
The county typically collects more than $750,000 a year from its 2 percent surcharge on hotel room and other short-term rentals
The salary of the public communications manager ranges from about $53,000 to $90,000 a year, depending on the applicant's experience.
Eric Keaton has been the acting manager since Dec. 15 and wants the job full time. He took the helm when Diane W. Jones returned to the private sector after four years with the county.
Other finalists are Sheila Riddle, Linda McBride, Thomas Nocera, Christopher Hodges, Clara Moll, Lyle Halvorson, Janine Ferrante, Gary Cooper and Christopher Williams.
The position attracted 95 qualified applicants, Pasco personnel Director Barbara DeSimone said.
